2011 Winner

The 2011 Mastercam Innovator of the Future competition challenged students to design and machine a working capo to be judged by the co-founder and current president of CNC Software, Inc., Mark Summers. With his combined interests in machining and guitars – Mark has been playing for over 20 years – Mark was a great judge of both functionality and manufacturing skills.

Winner
David "Scott" Harrel of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in Salisbury, North Carolina has been named the winner of the 2010-2011 Mastercam Innovator of the Future competition. Scott sought to create a capo that was simple to operate while adding to the aesthetics of the instrument. He created a capo that strays from the typical torsion spring design and instead created a new easy-to-use basic mechanism.

Scott, and his instructor, Jason Hill traveled to Hartford on September 7, 2011 to attend the first ever CNC Software headquarters open house. While there, he and his instructor had the opportunity to meet Mark Summers, a number of Mastercam programmers, and talked to numerous industrial users.

We would like to thank Jason Hill for all encouraging Scott to enter the competition and supporting him while he created his capo. Scott spoke very highly of Jason and the impact he has had on his life in his competition write-up. After getting to know Jason and Scott during the prize trip, we're very impressed by both of them. We look forward to seeing more entries from this school!

Mark Summers

  mark

In 1983, Mark Summers co-founded CNC Software with his brothers. It might be thought that, as the president of CNC Software, Mark is too busy with the details of running a company and not as involved in the machining aspect. This is far from the truth. In addition to having a CNC in his basement that he uses for personal woodworking projects, Mark reaches out to local schools with manufacturing programs helping students with robotics competitions, machining projects, and programming with Mastercam. He has always put an emphasis on the importance of supporting schools and educating the next generation of manufacturing professionals.
Because of his emphasis on education and rewarding students who go above and beyond, he is excited to serve as the judge for the 2011 Mastercam Innovator of the Future competition. As a guitar enthusiast, Mark quickly chose a capo for the challenge piece. With his 20 years of experience as an amateur guitar player and professional manufacturing background, Mark was an excellent judge.
