PART SPECIFICATIONS
The challenge for IOF 2007 is to design and machine a 1/2 scale steering wheel with:
- An outside diameter of 7.00" and an overall thickness of 1.00".
- The grip cross section has an unspecified diameter.
- The center hub should have a diameter of 2.25" with a minimum thickness of .20".
- The mounting hole pattern should have 9 holes on a 1.00" radius to accommodate #6-32 screws and a center hole diameter of 1.75" to fit wiring.
- The final assembly must have a tolerance of +/- 0.010", and a horn button to cover the mounting screws.
Contest Rules:
- The part must be programmed with Mastercam software.
- The part must have a professional look and remain consistent with the theme industry standards.
- The part can be made of any material that would be appropriate for an actual steering wheel.
- Tell us the story behind the part, such as the inspiration for the design, materials used, etc.
- Include photos of you and the part, your instructor, the school lab, and the CNC machine. Electronic files preferred.
- Submitted one finished, unpainted part.*
- All entries become the property of CNC Software, Inc. Parts cannot be returned.
- All designs become property of Boyd Coddington.
- All entries and completed entry forms must be postmarked by December 31, 2007.
- The Innovator of the Future contest is open to any individual student in the United States using Mastercam.
* Please note that the spirit of this rule is to prevent poor machining from being hidden by paint. As a result, parts may not be heavily painted or leather-wrapped but clear-coats and detail painting will be allowed. Remember that, as Boyd’s camp put it, “This isn’t a decorating competition.” The focus should stay on innovative design and quality machining.
